JONATHAN CLARK

(From Photo, by W.J. Root)

Real estate development has been in the Masters family since 1848 when Jonathan Clark (John Masters’ great-great grandfather) immigrated to the United States from England. He was one of the most noted builders of Chicago and the largest contractor and owner of real estate, which he improved with substantial business blocks, in the business portion of Chicago. In 1849, His brother Thomas joined him to form Jonathan Clark & Brother. They were responsible for erecting Farwell Hall (north side Water Works building) the Academy of Design and were the superintendents of the Illinois buildings at the Paris Exposition. After the great fire of 1871 he rebuilt the Chicago Water Works and continued business alone with his best and notable work improving Chicago real estate investment in the Loop Area: the Brother Jonathan Building, the Peoples Theater, the Metal Workers’ Building, the McCormick Hall block, the Kingsbury Music Hall, the Wanamaker Building, the YMCA building and the Manufacturers’ Building. Jonathan’s spirit still thrives within our firm today. (Source:”Industrial Chicago, The Building Interests,” Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1891, pp 704-705)
